Athena Project Announces the 6th Annual Athena Project Arts Festival, March 3-31, 2018

Theatre, dance and music highlighting the artistic contributions of women and girls.

For immediate release, Denver, CO, November 10, 2017 — March ushers in a month long celebration of women in the arts during the 6th Annual Athena Project Arts Festival from March 3-31, 2018. Experience a Weekend of Music at Swallow Hill, World Dance, Girls Create Celebration, Plays In Progress Series, panel discussions and workshops. We are pleased to offer free and donation only entrance to some events. Ticketed events range from just $5 to $25 and go on sale in January.

NEW THIS YEAR, Cross Pollinations, an exciting opportunity to see never before collaborations between artists. We pair a musician with a playwright, dancer, visual artist, and a spoken word artist and at the end of twelve hours each pair will present a live original work of art during our Weekend of Music.

To celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th, in partnership with Swallow Hill Music, we feature an open mic night for female singers and songwriters. On March 9th is the Cross Pollinations showcase and March 10th offers a concert of both a headliner and emerging artist.

We’ve expanded our Plays In Progress Series, a play development workshop for female playwrights to include a concert and table reading. Playwrights submitted their work during last year’s festival, one-hundred and fifty scripts were judged blindly and three of the strongest submissions were selected this past fall to receive workshop-level productions produced by Athena Project. Each play featured during the festival will get two workshop readings. Workshop-level productions are designed with minimum sets, lights, sound, and props. Actors stay on book in case there are last minute changes to the script but are not behind music stands as in a traditional staged reading. Immediately following each reading the playwright receives critical feedback from audience and theatre professionals. Two additional scripts were chosen to receive either a concert or table reading to further enhance our efforts to support women writers during the development process. For more detailed information about this year’s PIP’s and readings click here. The Plays In Progress Series run from March 22-March 31.

Once again we will host an Evening of World Dance, this year at CU Eugenia Rawls- Courtyard Theatre. Featuring local resident choreographers ranging in style from Modern and Post-Contemporary to Hula & Bollywood. We will look at how each choreographer works with trios. It will be an exciting evening highlighting the rich diversity and talent within our Denver community! This event will showcase some of Denver’s unique creative female talent as well as emerging choreographers. New this year master classes and panel discussions the day following the performance showcase. Dance events are March 17 and March 18.

We also are presenting a very special showcase of plays created by middle school girls during our Girls Create summer camp. This gives girls a chance to see their work as a live performance with actors on stage and a director. This is a highlight of the festival for our young emerging artists. Their energy and excitement is contagious! On the same day, the girls who participated in the fashion design and visual arts camps will have their creations highlighted in a gallery style show at the theatre.

About Athena Project
Athena Project is a professional group of artists dedicated to supporting and expanding women’s artistic contributions to the Denver stage and the wider community. Athena envisions a world where women’s voices are powerfully expressed and recognized for artistic merit in the community. Athena Project’s mission is to empower women and strengthen the Denver community through developing and showcasing women and girls’ artistic contributions, while inviting new audiences into the creative process. Each Spring, Athena Project produces an Arts Festival that includes theatre, dance and music highlighting the contributions of women artists. In the Fall, we produce a Premiere Production which is selected from one of the plays workshopped during the Festival. Girls Create, is our summer intensive where we highlight various art forms in a week long camp culminating in a final performance to be shared with friends, family, and the public. This program empowers girls to lead and effect change in themselves and others through creative learning. Rounding out our annual events are Pop Up music, dance, fashion and theatre performances around the city as well as Visual Art Shows.
